Top Tips for Designing Your Bathroom

Posted 8th February 2009

Designing your bathroom can be a tricky process, especially if you are doing it for the first time. There is so much to consider when it comes to getting your design right, so check out the useful guide below so you can achieve the bathroom you’ve always wanted...

Consider the space available
Make sure that you allow sufficient space for everything in your design layout from considering the space available for getting in and out of the bath and shower to deciding where the windows and doors are and how much room is available to open and close these. If you don’t want to totally redesign the room and are just looking to update your existing bathroom suite then you need to carefully measure the space available and purchase items that are equal in shape and size. If you find that space is at a premium in your new bathroom plan then consider installing items such as a large bathroom mirror or glass shelving which gives the illusion of a larger room.

Do you have enough storage?
Your bathroom can accumulate a large amount of clutter and there is usually a large collection of toiletries, medicines, towels and cleaning materials to accommodate. There are various pieces of bathroom furniture available to include in your design which will help to increase the amount of storage your bathroom has. A bathroom vanity cabinet can store a number of items and is particularly useful if you have small children as these cupboards can often be locked. You need to consider where your bathroom storage items will be positioned in your new layout to get exact measurements before you invest in any items.

How will you ventilate your bathroom?
The majority of bathrooms have windows which allow for natural ventilation. If your bathroom doesn’t have a window then you need to consider installing an extractor fan. Before you purchase a fan you need to calculate the volume of your bathroom by multiplying the height of the room by the width and the length. Once you have the bathroom size measurements, multiply this figure by the number of air changes required in an hour which is roughly 20 for a bathroom, you then need to purchase an extractor fan that is capable of providing the required flow of air.
Once you have these fundamental basic requirements sorted out, you can then consider the more ascetically pleasing side of the bathroom re design such as the type of bathroom accessories and bathroom furniture that you want to purchase for your new bathroom.
